Wire Drawing - Reducing Cross Section of Your Wires Efficiently
Wire drawing is the process used in producing a range of wire diameters and associated properties. The resultant wire may be used in a wide range of applications like electrical wiring, tension-loaded structural components, springs, paper clips, wheel spokes, stringed musical instruments and many more. With the huge demand for wires in various industry sectors, it is very essential that you get high-quality products for better efficiency, performance and production.
The Wire Drawing Process
So, how exactly is wire drawing done? This metal working process involves pulling the wire through a single die, or series of drawing dies. You may wonder how it is different from extrusion process. Well, while this process involves pulling of the wire to get the desired effect, in extrusion the wires are pushed through the die to create complex cross-sections. The entire process is performed in room temperature for which it is called a cold process. However, for working on large wires, higher temperature is used in order to reduce the forces.
Materials used in Wire Drawing
To enhance the entire process, a wide range of lubricants are used in metal working today. This also includes a variety of lubricants and fluids. They also go a long way to achieve a better surface finish and longer die life. While wet drawing involves immersing the dies and wire or rod in the lubricant, in dry drawing, the wire or rod is allowed to pass through a container of lubricant to coat its surface. Sometimes, instead of lubricants, even metal coating is done, which performs the job of a lubricant. Following the drawing operation, a process may use cleaners that help to get remove lubricants, phosphate and oxalate coatings and carbon/soot residues after annealing. Role of Dies in Wire Drawing
Drawing dies are integral part in this metal working cold process. These are typically made of tool steel, tungsten carbide, or diamond. For drawing very fine wire a single crystal diamond die is used. The quality of the dies has a great impact on the quality of the resultant product. Accordingly, for hot drawing, cast-steel dies are used, while for steel a tungsten carbide die is used. Whatever the industry sector, wire drawing is integral to get the best, right from availing strength in car tires to stability in concrete.
