on the 300 lb braided synthetic line before you lock your drag and attempt to retrieve some of your line back!? God Bless all...
wait until he takes the slack out of your line. as soon as he tightens up and you feel his weight, SET the hook! don't let it run too far. it will spit out the bait or get you tangled in the kelp. make sure you have your drag adjusted correctly. not more than half of your line test. closer to a third would be better.
and, uhh... make sure you have plenty of line...
