How to Test Power Supply?
Is there a way to test a power supply unit without actually hooking it up to my computer? I have a used one that I want to sell of but don't feel like taking the PSU out of my PC to test it.
it is pretty simple to power up an ATX power supply without it being connected to a motherboard.
First you have to be comfortable with shorting out the green "ps_on" wire to a ground (black) wire - this simulates the motherboard when the power button is pressed. Paper clips work well. See here for more info http://www.gideontech.com/content/articles/196/1
Before you plug it in and turn it on, you have to connect some load to the +5 and +12v through one of the hdd connectors at least, so if you have an old CDrom or hdd laying around that is good to use. This is needed since some power supplies will not power on when there is no load connected.
