Superposition of waves?
Two waves are described as follows:
Ψ1(x,t) = 0.0030 cos(6.0x - 300t)
Ψ2(x,t) = 0.0030 cos(7.0x - 250t)
Find the resulting wave and Δx between two consecutive 0's of the resultant wave.
My answer I got for the resultant wave is
Ψt(x,t) = 0.0060 cos(-x/2 - 25t) cos(13x/2 - 275t)
I can't figure out how to tackle the second part of this question. We want to find the distance between two consecutive points where the amplitude is zero. Would you set Ψ equal to zero and solve for x? I'm having a hard time grasping the logic. Any help is appreciated!
Yes you put the resultant wave equal to zero and solve it for x.
You'll find an infinity of solutions, just take two consecutive solutions (careful with that when you calculate with the cosines), say n and n+1, substract the solution n+1 to the n solution and you find what you want!
