Split Ring
What is the use of the split-ring commutator and carbon brushes in a DC electric motor?
In a very simplified way. Thanks in advance.
I wish I could draw you a simple diagram here, but anyway, the split-ring commutator is essentially a switch which ensures that the input current flows IN THE SAME DIRECTION on each half cylce of the armature. This ensures that the motor can turn in the same direction all the time. Remember that the perminant magnetic field points in the same direction all the time.
Now, I think you can see that if the input current was supplied by ordinary wires, then as the motor rotated, with wires would get horribly tangled up! So called 'carbon brushes' are used, which just rest against the commutator rings. The name 'brush' is misleading. The 'brushes' are small, solid blocks of carbon that have a shaped depression in them so that they can rest against the curved surface of the split rings.
