How to catch fish from man-made lake?
We moved to a community that is centered around a man-made lake that allows catch and release fishing from the shore. I've taken the kids out a couple of times and no hits. I think it's something I am doing as people tell me the fish bite. The lake is stocked with bluegills, bass (I think), and something else. I want to get a hit before the kids get bored with it and give up.
What set-up should I use (bobbers, sinker, hook, etc)? What size of each?
What should I use as bait?
When's the ideal time to fish?
For kids and beginner angler. I ALWAYS suggest this when fishing with kids.
Use light tackle. 4-8 pound test. (for small ponds ect. I would go with 4 or 6 pound test.
tie on the end of the line a 1/16 or 1/32 ounce jigheag.(white is a good color) with a twister tail (also white or chartreuse) Place a bobber (smallest one you can use) on the line about 1 1/2 to 3 feet above the jig. Hook a minnow.(alive and frisky)through the lips and toss it out there where there is some vegetation nearby. You want the bobber small enough that the minnow will be able to move it around a little as it swims. And not keep the minnow stationary. I promise you if there re fish in the pond, you will catch something on this setup. Plus it's easy to rig and simple to fish. That works good with kids. Or instead of the jig that I mentioned you can get very small "ice fishing" jigs. They are very small and very light. You can use the same set up just use the ice jig and waxworms instead of minnows. The Bluegill and Shellcrackers love them. They fall slowly and usually get bit on the way down.
