2.VEDARANYAM: A fisherman was killed in an alleged attack by the Sri Lankan Navy personnel on an Indian fishing boat here near Kodiakkarai on Wednesday night.

Meanwhile, the DMK fishermen wing has announced a massive protest in front of the Sri Lankan Deputy High Commissioner's office in Chennai on July 10 condemning the continued attack on fishermen.

3.About 20 Lankan Navy personnel in a fast boat approached their vessels, fired warning shots in the air and then asked them to raise their hands, they said. Six of them jumped into the boats, throwing away their catch and seizing their mobile phones and other communication equipment, they said.

They may call the Sri Lankan Ambassador to express India's serious concerns or phone up their Foreign Minister to convey India's deep anguish over repeat attacks on our fisherman. The Lankan govt would immediately offer to ''look into the matter'' and that may finish the process for good, for the umpteenth time.

The harassment of Tamil fishermen under pretext of checking for LTTE spying or transport of arms etc have been going on for long and even after the liquidation of the LTTE base, the torment had not abated for the poor fishermen on this side. Apart from expressing concerns, the India govt or the TN govt had not ever followed up with the neighbour if any tangible action has been taken to curb such reckless harassment of innocent citizens and if any action was taken on navy officials shooting at the people indiscriminately.
