Saltwater Ringed
preventing infection on new nose ring?
i just got my nose pierced yesterday with a ring not a stud. the piercer told me to dab it with a q-tip with unscented soap twice a day and to do the same with a q-tip with salt water. is there anything else i should do to prevent infection? this is my first cartilage piercing. i feel like it's not really getting clean with the soap and saltwater.
It's not good to clean it with soap and salt water. Salt is way too harsh (or at least regular salt is) and soap causes build up and blocks out oxygen.
Sea salt soaks twice a day for 5-10 minutes each soak - 1/4th of a teaspoon of non-iodized sea salt to 8oz of hot water.
Also - don't change it before it is healed (3-6 months), don't play with it, don't move the jewelry, don't emerge it underwater, and don't clean it with anything but the sea salt soaks and you should have a very very low risk of infection. Piercings pretty much only get infected if you get pierced by someone who is not using clean stuff or if you don't take care of it properly.
