Fly Fishing question?
has anyone purchased the Reddington Crosswater combination or the Scientific Angler combo package 5-6 weight? What do you think of it? I want to start fly fishing but do not want to purchase a $300-$400 rig. If I enjoy it, I can always pass this rod on to my son and purchase the sage or something like that.

Also, which is better a 2 or 4 piece rod
Either would be acceptable for making the entry to the sport. I've heard some good impressions about the SA combo, although it's typically sold by massmarket retailers. Plus...it's sometimes heavily discounted.
Good: If you stay with the sport, you'll find you will appreciate the step up to a quality rod of better design/construction.
Not-So-Good: Cheap outfits often contribute to beginners giving up on fly fishing. That said, the SA is supposedly a properly balanced outfit.
2pc vs 4pc...
For a top quality rod, the difference between the two would be negligible, if detectable at all. Some rod designs actually benefit from the additional ferrules. The same cannot be said of inexpensive rods. If you need the portability of a 4pc, then get it. It's not costly enough to worry about, and the new caster won't have the skills or experience to detect the difference.
Unless you're going after salmon/steelhead/salt/bass, a 5/6 weight is an appropriate beginner rod.
And steer clear of Bass Pro. They may know spinnerbaits, plastic worms, and trolling motors, but Bubba don't know crap about fly fishing.
