How can I keep my rubber tree plant alive outdoors in winter?

I live in a warm climate, similar to Georgia in the southern USA, but winters are dry and temps can drop a little below freezing at night. Daytime is usually 10 to 15C and sunny in the daytime. I have a rubber tree plant but it's too large to bring into the house. I'd also like to avoid spending a lot of money at the DIY center on a kind of mini greenhouse.

Can I keep it outside covered with a thick translucent garbage bag perhaps? Water every couple of days.

Plastic covering rarely works to keep plants warm. They often freeze where the plastic touches the leaves. Could you just cobble together a teepee like greenhouse using three sticks and some Visqueen? If you put a string of Christmas lights inside, your plant should do fine.
