The Best Fly Fishing is in Alaska in the Fall

The Alaska Department of Fish and Game stocks many of the lakes throughout the state with trout, which provides a seemingly endless run from late spring through early fall. Yes, it's a long season in The Last Frontier. No, that is not a star treck reference; but rather its nickname in 1959. The secondary nickname for the northernmost U.S. state is The Land of the Midnight Sun.
When fishing the small lakes around Anchorage, it's advisable to be aware if entering U.S. Army territory. The army base requires a recreational access permit in addition to the routine fishing license. Rabbit Lakes are stocked occasionally by Alaska Fish and Game with rainbow trout and the division also stocks most of Kenai Peninsula's freshwater lakes including the larger Elephant, Vagt, Island and Upper Summit lakes.
Chena, Birch, Dune and Geskakmina lakes near Fairbanks are stocked with rainbow trout, and Harding and Summit lakes, stocked with lake trout.
Other facts about Alaskan fly fishing in the fall:
· Alaska's lakes freeze over in winter making ice fishing popular right up until the lakes begin to freeze in fall.
· The most abundant species of trout are the rainbow and steelhead trout. Lake trout, cutthroat and brook trout run a close third-fourth-fifth.
· Fly-fishing outranks live bait fishing.
· A license to fish in Alaska is required for anyone over age 16. Available from the Alaska Department of Fish and Game plus local distributions points (grocery markets, lodges and bait shops), a one-year license is $145 for nonresidents in 2010. Another option is a one-day license for only $20.
Making the most of your flyfishing adventure to the Land of the Midnight Sun requires some forethought. Season diet changes of the fish, no matter what the species, affect the flies used. Spawning season makes the fish more aggressive and that too affects the flies that get the most response from the agitated swimmers.
Seasoned Alaska trout fishing aficionados recommend that traveling fishermen check in with Alaskan bait shops for fresh updates on river runs before heading out for the day. It's expensive enough getting to Alaska for an Alaska fishing trip, whether you travel by air or by sea that you don't want to waste the day disappointed that you don't have precisely the right fly with you. So plan out every detail of your trip and be smart about it. Visit your local outfitter in advance to get pro tips.
