Plastic Monofilament
Would this be a decent first time bass combo?
I will just be fishing small drop-shot worms, wacky rigged senkos, you know finesse soft plastics. Maybe even lizards. I am not going to be a full blown bass angler, just a monthly thing. I was thinking would the 6' medium action rod with that will hold 115 yds. of 6 lb. line be enough? The heaviest lure i will throw will be 1/4 oz. I will use 6-8 lb. monofilament.
Would it do me for just monthly bass fishing?
It will work but you got better choices within that price range.
Currently, there are several nice combos that will do a better job than the combo you picked. The combo impressed me the most is Daiwa D-Shock. It got a fairly smooth front drag spinning reel and a graphite rod and it is very reasonably priced. Unfortunately, there is a catch. I do not recommend that you purchase those combos online because you absolutely need to see those rods in person.
The markings on those rods are VERY MESSED UP. There are at least 3 (maybe even 4) variations of rods out there! One will be a fiberglass rod. The other two are graphite or graphite composite rods; one will feel more like a medium-light and one will feel feel closer to a medium-heavy fiberglass rod. They will look exactly the same and they will have the exact same markings on them even though they are actually quite different. There's absolutely no way you could find out about this unless you held those rods in your hands! You could find out if the rod was made out of graphite (or graphite composite) rather easily. You only need to disassemble the 2 piece rod and look into the rod blank. If you saw a solid piece of dark gray carbon like material in the center of the rod, you found yourself a graphite rod. You could find out if the rod is closer to a medium-light or closer to a medium-heavy by wiggling it.
Daiwa D-Shocks will come with either 1 ball bearing reels or 3 ball bearings reels. Most combos that came with a 3 ball bearing reel will also come with the stiffer graphite rod. Unfortunately, I couldn't guarantee that. You really need to wiggle those rods in your hand to find out which rod it came with.
These combos are VERY CHEAP now because the manufacturer knew they messed up big time on their recent batch(es). Take advantage of this situation. These combos are very good buys.
PS: I think you should look for that graphite, medium-heavy rod. You could find 1 ball bearing, medium-heavy graphite rod combos between $16 to $18! 3 ball bearing reel combo will cost about $2-$3 dollars more.
