What is the life of a professional ballroom dancer like?
I do ballroom dancing and absolutly love it! I really want to become professional, but what exactly is that like? Do they have a day job or dance all day? Also, I know that the money i pay for provate lessons mainly goes to the owner of the dance place, so how do you make a living out of it?
It really depends on the level and specialization of the dance professional. Do you plan to teach social dance, competitive dance, do you plan to get certified as a judge or a scrutineer?
Do you plan to compete professionally or you only want to teach? If you plan to compete than you have to set aside some time to practice as a professional, set aside some money to take private lesson, make costumes and pay competition fees. But on the good side as a competition professional you're likely to get more students. Yeah you will be exhausted on a regular basis. Remember to take vacations. Competing professionals don't have a day job other than dancing simply because there isn't any time left. Non-competing professionals might have a day job possibly part-time or they might go to school in addition. Some competing professionals I happen to know go to college full time, but their parents are helping them out with support cause there is really no time for anything else.
It is not true that most of the money goes to the owner of the place, at least not for the case with my teachers. The studio takes $15 out of $80 that they charge.
