What it must have been like to be a war correspondent during WWII?
I can just see the planes as opposing air forces vie for mastery of the skies while the primary focus was on the convoys in the sea lanes attempting to land reinforcements for the battlefield. All the while opposing armies are attempting to breach/protect the front line.
Would you have risked your life to be in a position to witness the developing strategies as they unfolded to be able to describe the action to the citizens over seas?
I've listened to quite a few clips from war correspondents during WWII (OTR is a hobby of mine, especially old news clips). Broadcasting and news reporting was done in such a intelligent, yet easy to understand way. Keep in mine there were some correspondents to were killed in the line of duty, the most famous being Ernie Pyle, killed in France near the end of the European War.
I wanted to add a few recommendations. If you get the chance, listen to the broadcast "London After Dark" done by CBS in 1940. This is a great example of how correspondents covered the war, and the on-goings of London during the Blitz. The best piece I think that comes from WWII however is Edward R. Murrow's report from Buchenwald. This is one of the most chilling, haunting, yet amazing reports to listen to. He describes the conditions at Buchenwald in such detail that you feel you are walking with him as he goes over it.
