How do I know what bass notes fit with a guitar line according to musical theory?
Ok, so me and my guitar player in my band were writing a song and I did this crazy bass line to go with it and he said that the notes didn't work with musical theory so I was wondering if anyone could in depth explain to me how I could be for sure that the bass lines I write match the chords and notes my guitar player writes.
Well you don't need to know anything about music theory to know if you like something or not.
Something isn't good because it "follows the rules", it's good on its own. Besides that, there are no "rules" for music. Music theory came after, and it's just an attempt to organize and apply names to common sounds.
If it sounds good, do it. It doesn't seem like your guitar player thinks it sounds very good though. If he's just refusing to acknowledge that it sounds good because he can't make sense of it, then tell him I said to just let it go. Just because you can't explain it, doesn't mean it's not awesome.
