how to catch blue marlin or yellow fin tuna by hook and line?
Two different stories. Blue marlin are big (generally 200 pounds or more, up to over 1000). The only way to get them is (as the other guys have mentioned) to get on a charter boat with a crew and captain who know what they're doing, and be prepared to spend several days at it. Try Cabo San Lucas or down the coast of Mexico, or Hawaii. The fishing is generally trolling several lines on heavy tackle, when a line is bit the angler takes the rod and sits in a fighting chair to give better leverage as he pulls, while the captain uses the boat to follow the fish and help work it up to the boat.
Yellowfin are a different matter. You can catch them (sometimes big ones) on the same trips as the blue marlin, (generally as a bycatch) but the schools of smaller ones are common from the Mexican border south, depending on how warm the water is and the time of year. Late summer partyboat and charter trips out of San Diego often get into the 10-40 pounders.
The multi-day long range trips out of San Diego range as far south as Clipperton Island, and target the big ones (40-300+ pounds) -- in fact, all the world record yellowfin over the past 30 years or so have come off these trips. (The record is 388 pounds, two larger ones have been landed but disqualified by the IGFA for technicalities.)
These are party boats from 90-120 feet long, carrying roughly 20 passengers, casting baits to these fish with 100 pound test line, and fighting the fish standing at the rail from a nonmoving boat.
