Hooks Size
How do you adjust when using a different hook size in crochet?
I'm trying to crochet a hat like this

but I don't have the correct hook size and I can't find any patterns like it that I like.
So since it calls for a k hook, is there anyway I could do it with a g hook?
A G hook is a LOT smaller than a K hook. Naturally if you follow the pattern with a G the resulting hat will be too small. But you figured that which is why you're asking how to adjust the pattern.
Well, if you're brave, you can try. Assume that a standard adult hat is going to be about 20" in circumference and you can estimate the gauge from that (take the number of stitches you start with and divide by 5 to find the number of stitches in a 4" gauge swatch.
Now make a 4" gauge swatch using the pattern stitch from the pattern and count the number of stitches in it. Take the number of stitches made with the G hook and divide by the number of stitches you calculated from the pattern. The number will be greater than 1. Take that number and multiply the number of stitches called for in the pattern by it to get approximately the number of stitches you need to start with. Now there's a catch. This is going to be a repeating pattern. You have to figure out how many stitches are in the repeat and round to the nearest multiple. Let's say there are 5 stitches in the repeat (I'm just making up a number for my example). And you come up with a calculated number of 63 stitches. Then you either have to round up to 65 or down to 60, because you can't actually do 63 which is not divisible by 5.
If this kind of crochet math makes you woozy (and it does most people), then I'd suggest looking for another pattern that suggests a G hook. You'll still need to check your gauge, but at least you'll have a better chance of getting it.
