Question about the old fishing tackle maker, "Garcia Mitchell"?
So, when Garcia Mitchell quit making reels, did the two men just split up and create the brands "Abu Garcia" & "Mitchell". Just something i have been wondering about all day. My dumb self can't figure this out.
The Wormist, i would love to have one of those old mitchell 300's. love to. don't have an ebay account or a credit card to get one off of ebay.
my dad has one of those old 300c's and he wouldn't sale that to me to save his life!

Maurice Jacquemin, a Carpano & Pons engineer, was the inventor of the Mitchell reel as we know it today. His goal was to produce a reel which was not only a container to hold line, but a tool which would cast the lure at a great distance with precision and recover the line without tangling. After two years of research, the revolutionary Mitchell 300 was born in 1948. Mr. Pons named the reel in honor of his brother, Mitchel. A marked departure from the reels of its day in mechanics and appearance, the Mitchell 300 was the beginning of a chain reaction that rapidly propelled the company to international renown.
In 1965, upon the death of Mr. Pons, Mitchell and other Carpono & Pons divisions became separate companies. The future was bright as production reached 12,000 reels per day in 1970. Unfortunately, the oil crisis and strong international competition in the late 1970s forced Mitchell to declare bankruptcy in 1981

garcia was the importer and sales agent.
abu was/is a different manufacturer in sweden that also builds products for other manufacturers labeled cardinal as well as abu/cardinal.
the company is now abu garcia since the closure of the manufacturing plant in france.
l have a couple of those earlier mitchells still in good fishing condition. l also have an old japanese copy of that original mitchell. the japanese were well known for their knock offs.
