Game Fish
why is it illegal to keep game fish in a pond or an aquarium?
let's say you go fishing in a local river and catch a bass, you decide to take it home, you build a pond for it, and you let it live there. I heard this was illegal, but why?
Well, there are lots of laws against owning local wildlife. Mostly because people don't care for them properly, or because they're endangered/rare and every adult needs to be in the wild making babies.
Now, mostly those laws are referring to large predators, birds of prey, raccoons that carry disease, song birds that are disappearing at alarming rates, etc.
I think the problem with fish is when they're taken out of their native waters and kept in a different place. Like those freaking Asian Carp that are killing the Great Lakes. They came here as game fish for large ponds until flooding washed them out of their "game ponds" into the natural waterways where they continue to wreak havoc.
I don't think anyone would call the law if you want to keep a fish in your pond. Just don't expect it to last long, and keep in mind that your itty-bitty pond may actually be uncomfortable and harm the fish.
