Attaching leader to fly line?
whats the best way to attach leader to fly line that already has a loop on it. I know how to do it as ther are many sites available with the knots etc. just wanted personal preferences if you can please.
There are so many different ideas that people have about this but it really involves a lot of different variables.
#1) How long is the leader because a simple loop to loop connection is a bitch when the leader is so long that you have to wind it into the top eye of the rod, this causes a problem loading your line and preparing for shooting. If it is a fairly short leader, say 4 feet maybe then I'd tie a loop in my leader on one end and pass it through the loop on the main line and pull the tag end of the leader through it's own loop and tighten it down so that the "2-loop connection" is as small as possible.
#2) A blood knot could be suitable and is 100 % strength.
#3) I'm going to try and word this so you can understand it which is not gonna be easy so email me if you need more help and I can walk you through it. I use this knot on "ALL" line to line connections be it fly line or on any other fishing rod. It's easy as hell so try to stick with me. It retains 100% of it's strenth and the resulting knot is very small so as not to cause any wind resistance. Lay about 8 inches of your fly line that runs off your reel, through your eyes and down. Lay about 8-inches of it along side about 8 inches of your leader so basically you have two lines laying side by side, the leader and the main line. Grasp both lines at both ends of the overlaying sections, so now you are holding a double strand of line between your hands. A few times practicing this next step and you'll get it. You basically push the two grasped parts towards each other (push your hands together while grasping the lines. This action if done right will cause the lines to bed and turn into a loop. Grasp the loop at the bottom where the lines cross. You now have a circle of line in between your thumb and pointer finger of your right hand. This will mean that the tag ends of both lines will be hanging down and left. Both tag ends go through the loop you created twice so after the second time they are once again pointing away from the loop down and left. So now you have in each hand two sections of line. Slowly pull those sections away from each other so the loop starts to tighten. All four strands should tighten at the same time so the loop stays even. Right before the loop starts to tighten (this is a key point to making this knot work) you have to put the loop in your mouth and get it wet. The moisture will act as a lubricant and make the knot cinch down tight. So spit and finish pulling the loop tight now all the way. You should now have an even knot, nicely shaped with the lines laying against each other. Clip your tag ends leaving about 1/16 of an inch of tag to ensure any slippage does not pull it apart. The knot is great because of it's strength, it has little or no wind resistance.
