Fly Equipment
I would like to learn to fly fish. What do I need in the way of equipment to get started?
In my opinion, the best way to learn how to Flyfish is to learn through experimentation and by taking a 2 hour lesson at your local Fly fishing shop.
In 1-2 hours a seasoned Flyfisherman can put you on the right track as to how to cast, where & what type of general fly to cast, how to read water, Etc.
In the mean time you will also need an outfit, possibly some waders, a net, needle-nose pliers and some flys.

In my opinion, a novice Fly-fisherman should target Bluegill in lakes and ponds before targeting Trout & Salmon.
Why?
#1. As a new fisherman you should expect to lose a number of flys due to casting issues- Good Trout flys aren't cheap! Bluegill flys ARE cheap.
#2. Your basic Trout and Salmon are the two hardest fish to figure out in any type of watershed. Add in your inexperience reading stream water, choosing correct flys via "hatches", & novice casting difficulty and you begin to see why more fly-rods end up gathering dust than being used. Flyfishing isn't something you do well in a couple hours, (like a video game)......That's why it's important to approach FF with the right attitude.
In my opinion, If you start Flyfishing for Bluegill it gives you a basic idea of how to cast without overwhelming you with "hatches", reading water, Etc - think of it like a hands-on, inexpensive "practice" for tougher fish, (Trout/Salmon).
Once you master some basic cast's and are able to catch numerous Bluegill at every "practice", slowly work your way up to Trout.
If you approach Flyfishing with the right attitude expect great returns....
(Obviously, if you live in a rich Trout/Salmon area belay the B-gill concept, but if not, going the Bluegill route is a good idea.)
