Fishing Need
I want to start sea fishing, need help please?
I have a carp rod and a telescopic rod both with open faced reels, are they both suitable for sea fishing, from the end of a pier. And any names of any popular rigs? weight sizes? hook sizes? thanks.
Hi, The first thing about sea fishing is safety. If you are on a beach or on the rocks especially when the wind is up and the sea turns a bit wild or if you're fishing the tide in as is normal for sea fishing make sure you have a safe exit where the sea doesn't get round the back of you while you're not looking....yes it can on flat beaches and cut you off and on rocky bits it can fill the place where you crossed to get to a good ledge and then you're stuck and if the sea gets wilder or rises higher as the tide comes in it can take you for supper, or breakfast if it's morning and you can't escape.
Remember the 23 Chinese cockle pickers in Morecombe Bay who drowned when the tide came in round the side of them and cut them off. It comes in on Morecombe Bay faster than you run over the sands......it's the most treacherous bay in Britain but it's not the only one that can kill you.

On piers, jetties, and harbour walls and rocks you must be alert and note how conditions are changing. It's easy to get swept off by a rogue wave or a sudden strong gust of wind which can knock you off balance and on slippery rocks or the edge of a breakwater or harbour wall that can be the end for you so keep a watch out and have a safe way off wherever you are.
I live near the sea on an island. Always respect how dangerous the sea can be but also enjoy it's magic and the good things it gives us.
You can use a hand line for sea fishing off the pier which is normally a braided line wound onto wooden or plastic frame, or you can use almost any kind of rod if it's strong enough.
The carp rod can be used but it will get spoiled so it's not a good idea.
The telescopic might be OK if it's strong enough.
Sea fishing is more robust than lake or river fishing and if you are on a pier you have to lift the fish a long way up or drop a landing net on a rope and guide the fish over it but it's better with two people if you do that.
I used a cheap telescopic as a travel rod for backpacking trips and fished on five continents with it in the sea and on lakes and rivers.
I bought it for peanuts from a night market stall in Singapore and it lasted over ten years before I replaced it with another telescopic...£3 well spent.
You will see people using light or medium spinning rods, big heavy spinning rods, short boat rods, beachcasters, bamboo poles, almost anything that will hold a line to fish the sea from piers.
Mostly you dont need long casts so short rods are OK. Quite often you just drop the line over the side to find fish.
Piers attract fish. Little fish use the supports as cover to hide around and find food on the weeds that grow on them and big fish come in to grab the little fish.
In Asia they build fishing platforms called Kelongs in the language of Malaysia, that work the same way.
I used to stay on one sometimes when I lived there.

For reels it's most common to use a centre spool reel with 12-15lb line but you'll see centre pin reels and others used too. Whatever fits the rod and lets you wind in at a reasonable rate and won't break under a bit of stress.
Mostly you'll get fish of 1 -4 lbs and occasionally a 6lb fish or over but you need a heavier line because the hook or weight, or the line itself, can get snagged in tough weeds or rock and then you have to pull hard to free it.
It you walk to one side so the pull is from a different direction it sometimes helps or it can pull the hook further into a crevice or a hole in the rock.
Sometimes you have to give up and cut the line so you don't want expensive weights on it.
Old sparking plugs, big wheel nuts from trucks found on the road, anything that sinks and can be tied onto a line will do.
In rough seas you need more weight to keep the bait down.
With expensive weights you'll have £££ sitting on the sea bed, or Krone if you buy them in Norway if you have to cut the line.
Because you don't need long casts for most pier fishing aerodynamic weights are not needed most times but for long stuff to get codling far out it's best to use a tear-drop weight of around 1/2 -1 ounze to get the distance and you'll need a beachcaster rod of 12 feet or so to do it and a big reel with 200 yards of 18 - 30lb line.
Some beach fishers go that way. Brighton beach on the south coast is good for it and especially for sea bass which you can get 50 yards out or less, especially when the sea is rough and they come in close to find the goodies churned up by the breakers.
At night it can be better than in the daytime, not only because there are no swimmers.

For hooks you need a selection from 1 inch to 2 1/2 inches long. Aberdeen hooks are good all-rounders but there are lots of other styles.
Get some 1/0, 2/0 and 3/0 Aberdeen hooks and some long Mustad worm hooks for flatfish, some 1/0 and 2/0 treble hooks, and you'll be set up for all sorts.
Circle hooks are very good but they are new -ish and not used as much as the others.

Sea floats can be used, or fish on the bottom, or just wind the line up a bit if it's over the side of the pier till you find fish.
I make my floats from Jif lemon bottles. Put some wire through, loop it at both ends to tie a line on and pour molten candle wax in to add weight for casting and seal the holes. Not too hot or you'll melt the plastic.
Turn the bottle so the wax seals both ends.
They are bright yellow and easy to see.

Bait can be old bits of fish or fish skin found on the pier, or new bits from a bought fish (oh, the embarrassment, buying a fish!!), limpets cut off the rocks, worms dug from the beach, artificial lures and spinners, spoons for flatfish trailed along the sandy bottom ( no good on rocky shores) with maybe a nice long juicy ragworm on the hook as well.
You can use a piece of silver foil even, wrapped round the hook with a tail left on that looks fishy to a fish.
Only worry about the first one. After that you've got bait to cut up for a dozen more.
Mackerel traces can be made with foil or with feathers. 3 to 6 hooks on a trace.
Fix it to your line with a swivel or a spring clip, put a weight on the end and drop it over the side or cast out a bit. Let it sink and the jig the rod up and down and then the feathers look like a tiny shoal of mackerel dinner tiddlers and you can get six fish on at once sometimes.
If you can't lift them you've got a problem and you can end up cutting the line, leaving six fish tied together with hooks in them. Other fish eating them when they die can get those hooks too.
BAAAAaaaad baaaaaad day.
Ethical hunting applies to fishing too.
Best to use a medium/heavy spinning rod for most pier fishing or another rod that has that has a bit of gumph but not to worry, that telescopic might be OK.
Loads of light rods are used but not for long traces or big baits.
Big baits get big fish. Little fish can't swallow a whole herring head at once.
Just use a trace of three feathers if you want mackerel on that telescopic rod, or single hooks.

Here are some rigs but mostly very simple stuff is used.
Classy rigs are used for match fishing and by real enthusiasts.
A hook on a separate line from the main line, sometimes held away from it by a paternoster so it doesn't get tangled up, and a weight tied on the bottom.
Or have the weight on a separate branch line and the hook on the end of the main line, joined with a swivel and spring clip for speed of changing it.
Use smaller breaking strain line for the hook and weight than the main line and you won't lose so much if you get snagged. The weaker line breaks first. Doesn't always work but it's normal to do and can be helpful.
Use spring clips to join the bits and then you can unclip the hook and it's foot of line from the rod, and clip another ready baited hook onto it and cast out straight away.
Get the hook out with it's bit of line and rebait it ready for next time.
Like a production line really, and useful if the pier is crowded with anglers because you can work in a small space that way, the same as on boats.
Take a bucket to keep the fish in, and a sharp filletting knife if you want to clean them there, which is best most times.
You can bring the fish over the railings and drop it straight into the bucket, rest the rod while you unclip the hook line from the main line and then the fish is in the bucket and separated from the rod and you can just clip another baited hook line onto the main line and cast out.
Then dehook the fish, clean it, and throw the guts over the side for groundbait.
Spencer-Wells forceps are good for dehooking and for tying knots tight.
All angling shops sell them. Five inches long is is OK but six inches is better. Get locking ones like these.
