Clear Catfish

fuzz on log and catfish ??? please help?
on my log in freshwater tank (10 gallons) its newly set up i cycled it for a week and a half and the day i added the fish like before i went to buy them at the store i noticed something on my log and it looked like slime or a spiderweb its clear andi dont know what it is. i scrubbed it off with an old tooth brus hand when i woke up in the morning it was there again even thiker. and i want to know how to get rid of it for good. please help.
i added a catfish to eat the stuff off my gravel and it looked like it was nipping at some of my platties. what is it doing and what should i do about it.
its clear with a black stripe
The log probably brought with it some fungi. Where did it come from, if you collected it it should have been sterilized first. You can go this by taking it out of there tank, letting it dry out for a couple days and then putting it in the oven baking at 325 for two hours. After this rinse it off and soak it in a 5gallon bucket for a few days changing the water once a day. Scrubbing the log may have done more harm than good since now that stuff is in your tank floating freely, change some of your water and suck out any free floating pieces.
As far as the catfish it sounds like you bought the wrong type. Catfish don't eat stuff like you were growing anyway, in fact many catfish like live food. Without knowing what you've got (edit your question and tell me what it looks like or provide a pic, I will tell you for sure) anything in the corydora family "cory cats they call them are great. they come in lots of colors, some big some small but all super peaceful rafael catfish (thee can get big) are also peaceful and shy (they do eat smaller fish though). Otocinclus are algae eater type cats and are great they eat algae and are totally peaceful. Here is a list of cats that can be agressive and would not go well with platys: Silver tipped cat, channel cat, angelicus cat, 4 line pim. cat,. You didn't buy a chinese algae eater did you? These are really common and inexpensive, but can be really aggressive and territorial, especially as they get larger. If it is one of these return it if you can because it will only get meaner, instead get an otocinclus or two, they are peaceful, actually eat algae (chinese and golden algae eaters actually prefer fish flakes and won't eat much algae if these are present). Hope this helped.
