Cheap Fishing Tackle
need some help fresh water fishing?
I have been going to state parks around new york and going to some in PA next week. Most of them have lakes, ponds etc and allow fishing. I have never fished in a fresh water lake. I just want to do it for fun, but i need to buy equipment.
I think bass is what these people are fishing for. Can someone steer me in the right direction as to which type of pole to get, bait, tackle etc. I would like to get something cheap that I dont have to worry about. I also need to know if i can use fake bait or whether to get a bobber or a sinker.

I agree with the "no baitcaster" tip. That's for the veterans and mostly only good for pitching lures while fishing on a boat. There are a plethora of rod and reel combination you can buy. A lot, if not most, already are equipped with line. Look for a rod that is at least 6 feet long; medium action. The reel should be spooled with 6 or 8 Lb. test monofilament (I say 10 is a bit too much for the rod/reel ratio). Of course, pick yourself up an extra 100 yard spool of line because you never know what could happen. Now, as for bait, get yourself some live bait and some choice lures. Invest in a small minnow bucket. Minnows are preyed upon by all fish you could possible target. You can sink them down to the bottom with a split-shot sinker about a foot from the minnow or you can use a bobber and let the minnow do the work (bobber is more for shallow water 3',5', even 10').
As far as lures go, get yourself a "minnow" style lure i.e. Rapala Countdown. The countdown is, in my opinion, as good as it gets (rainbow trout pattern; I fish PA 
) It's an extremely versatile lure. Next, get a top water "popper" or even two or three. Sizable bass and muskie thrash them with wreckless abandon at certain times. Grab yourself a small variety of soft plastic baits... and hey you are ready to rock. And roll.

I would recommend the 2 3/4" in either rainbow trout or Olive green muddler.
On this page, you can see some of the "Popper" style lures. Rebel makes some good ones that aren't as pricey as others. As far as soft plastics, something along the lines of this "Minnow Grub" can do no wrong. Anything that looks similar to it is great; even the versions with the double twister tails. I say get a light color, whether it be white or a clear variation. And also a dark color.. either solid or opaque colors. You'll figure out which color contrasts best when you are getting bites. Okay. I'm done righting my book. Oh, wait a second. It doesn't hurt to pick up a woolly bugger or two. I'd opt for the bead headed ones. Olive and black colored are my favorites.
