Catfish Rig
Does anyone know any good catfish rigs?
When i first started I was using a rig made up of a three way swivel with one side tied to the mainline, and the other side tied to a foot and a half piece of line and hook. The remaining side was tied to a 3/4oz lead pyramid sinker.
This past season i changed my rig to the line through a 3/4oz lead egg sinker tied to a swivel to hold the sinker up and a foot of line tied down from that with a 1/0 hook on it.
I am wondering if anyone knows of any better rigs for channels and flatheads for me to fish live bait (specifically live shad and chubs) with.
the sliding rig you are using is good as is the leader length. you don't want your bait able to swim everywhere, tangling you in structure. just use a heavier weight. try circle hooks if you are not already using them. and try live bluegill or other sunfish too. hook them in the tail, avoiding the spine. toss it out with 3 ounces and let it sit there struggling.
OR...
use a sliding float with a stop to adjust the fishing depth, a few splitshot on the line to slow the bait down. great with shad or 'gills. small carp are another great bait, if legal.
and remember to NOT set the hook if using circle hooks. put the reel in gear and let the fish do it.
move up to a 4/0 or 5/0 circle hook. l generally use saltwater gear for my catfishing.
