Where can I find formulas to help me design a worm drive for an electric motor?
I need formulas or guidelines to help me design a bronze worm gear. I have an ingoing 3200 rpm axis from an electric motor, that needs to be geared down to 60 rpm in an outgoing axis. I want to do this with a worm drive, but I don't know how to choose the number of teeth on the gear, threads on the worm, what shape they should have, gear diameter, etc. I took a machine elements course a while ago but I've forgotten all the formulas. If it would also allow me to calculate the resulting torque that would be great. And is there a way to predict, i.e without empirically testing, the mechanical efficiency of the drive? Any suggestions or links to websites would be greatly appreciated.

.the Browning Gear Box company has all that or you can get most of that information from any catalouge that sells power transmission products..If your lucky enough to have a good bearing supplier close to you visit them they might even have a a Cd with all that on it...So I dont leave you hanging though lets run through your problem real fast
input 3200
output 60
ratio is 60:1 (close as they will come unless special made)
once the work amount is established lets say 500 in lbs
divide the work by the ratio 500/60 = 10 as close as they will make
that means your will need a motor capable of 10 in pd seconds to move the loads...the physical size of the unit many times is way overblown but for our unknow puposes lets use a service factor of 7 yea 7 i have seen it as high as 25.. The next question is shaft right shaft left or input from side or input from side and dual output. The dynamics of the case or resistance to the torque moment is near zero since the work is done integral to the two componets and not very much is transfered to the mounting bolts. So that being said, all thats left is shaft to shaft to shaft height and coupling the shafts.From the past let me say if your using say a 256t base motor a fafnir or browning box is ot there to match. Since you have specified a bronze worm try a Faulk flex coupling that will reduce start up shock on the worms engagement into the follower. In general though your problem requires matching a gearbox to the job which is basically a nomograph placement of application rather than an enginnering problem. if you know the amount of work to be done your can calculate that from any std horsepower conversion and if you know the input motor horsepower the input torque is done the same way..Here's a rule of thumb that will hardly ever let you down...find a gearbox with the same size input shaft as the motor and at the right ratio and it will size itself..Sound pretty simple well do all the sliding charts a few time over the years and you find the little work arounds...In the end though if its a critical component call the gear box rep ...They generall will get a CD or list of some source to you and size it all in one call...Sorry i didn't give you a bunch of links but i'm pretty sure you can google worm gear drive.
