How to take care of a bamboo plant?
I bought a little bamboo plant today and I don't know how to take care of it! What do I need to know? How often do I water it (there's already maybe.... a tablespoon of water in there now from when I bought it) and do I need to trim the plant or the roots or anything? Any more information would be great!
Is your bamboo plant in water and rocks or soil?
If it is in water and rocks (or other artificial material) keep the base under water at all times. Once every other month you can give the plant some diluted liquid plant food in the water if you want to encourage growth. Be advised though, if you are feeding the plant it will continue to grow at a fast pace!
If it is in soil keep the soil moist, but allow the soil to dry out slightly at the surface between watering. Bamboo is grass and can tolerate marshy wet soil, but especially indoors watering too often can encourage mold and rot.
Keep your plant in a sunny area. You can train the bamboo how you like by trimming, or attaching to stakes/strings. Try not to trim too much in one trimming. Trimming up to 25% of the foliage in one sitting is tolerable if you need to, but allow the plant to recover in the next few weeks.
If you would like to keep the plant small and would like to train it, research bonsai gardening. Most of all, enjoy your new plant!
